color challenge #11... bubble gum pink...

This is my color challenge block #11 which is bubble gum pink. Not sure I succeeded at evoking gum so much as Pepto-Bismol. My starter fabric is on the lower left. I added lighter and darker pinks, hints of purple, duck egg and royal blue as well as some prints with grey in them to try to kill the pink's sweetness. It looks much more subtle in the photo. In "real life" this block is pretty eye searing. This pink is growing on me but I think I prefer it as an accent color...

bloggers bom #10

This is block #10 from the lovely and talented Pam for the Bloggers BOM. This sew-along is fun and very doable. It is never too late to join in! My block is made of KF scraps and lots of dots. You can see the rest of my blocks here and other people's there...

color challenge #12... mint green...

This weeks color challenge is mint green. I was inspired by the most delightful place on the east coast of Canada a town called Lunenburg in Nova Scotia. It is like a teeny tiny San Francisco filled with very ornate Victorian houses all painted in the most unusual color combinations. Mint green to me means one particular building down by the harbor. To the mint green I added hints of red, lilac, pink and mustard. Really enjoyed playing with a blue based green and will definitely use it again as it seems so fresh. My starter fabric is on the lower left...

nqr...square foot gardening...

Well I'm back... It was a disconcerting experience to be untethered to the digital world. At first there was separation anxiety being away from the internet. After a couple of days, the experience was completely enjoyable. Realized that very often I spend what little free time I have reading about what creative people are making rather than making things myself. Must strike a better balance between doing my own thing and being inspired by all my blog pals' amazing projects...

One of the things we did on our "staycation" was finish our newly built and planted vegetable beds. We are huge fans of Square Foot Gardening. The basic premise is that you create this very dense growing environment with a moisture retaining super soil for maximum growth and minimum weeding. You can garden this way in a large space or even on a condo balcony. We heartily recommend this book. Our previous attempts have been insanely successful. Here is the before and after so far:

gone fishing...

Husband and I have an unexpected week off. Not sure if we're going to actually go anywhere physically but we are going off the grid. No cellphones or internet. We are taking at the very least a digital vacation. See you soon!

color challenge #10... purple...

This week's 10th challenge is purple. For some reason purple conjures up scents and tastes for me- lilac trees but also Baskin Robbins "Oregon Blackberry" ice cream from my childhood. On a more stinky note, there was a time in the 80's when every woman wore Dior's "Poison" perfume which always smelled like grape bubble gum to me.

Here are the added fabrics with the starter on the lower left. This week's challenge was difficult because I had very little fabric to work with. I ended up adding some deep pink, royal blue, some hints of red and brown. Like my other blocks the fabric is made from Kaffe Fassett scraps. The block is drafted from a photo of an antique tile...

Participating in these challenges has really revealed color likes and dislikes that were previously subconscious. I have very little purple in the stash and could not say why...

color challenge #9... tomato red...

This week's color challenge from Victoria is "tomato red". Because so many of my blocks have lots of orange and rust, I decided to add darker and cooler tones. I mixed in baby and hot pinks, burgundies and a bit of green for contrast. The pink looks more dominant in the photo than in life. Still can't find my "orange" one which means it is definitely time to tidy up my space!

Here is my starter fabric on the lower left with the added fabrics...
